Kristin Ess Voluntarily Recalls Four Shades of Signature Hair Gloss

If you were planning on popping over to Target today to pick up Kristin Ess Signature Hair Gloss in Chocolate Cosmo⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣, Smoky Topaz⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣, Copper Penny⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣, or Amethyst Stone⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣, you’ll want to hold off for now. The beloved stylist and colorist behind the eponymous brand has announced that she’s voluntarily recalling these four shades of the in-shower color-refreshing treatment — but not because there’s anything wrong with the formula.

“After learning that some customers have received the wrong gloss in their gloss box, we launched a full investigation immediately and found that there were in fact some mis-packs,” Ess wrote in both an Instagram caption and within her Instagram Stories. As it turns out, the factory where the glosses were being kitted — a factory that Ess will no longer be working with — was packing multiple colors at the same time, which led to some boxes being packed with a different color than what’s indicated on the box.

So far, Ess says, 26 customers have notified the brand of having received the incorrect color within the last two weeks — a small number when you consider more than 600,000 were produced in the last year. But Ess isn’t taking any chances. “The odds of this happening to you is slim, but that does not minimize how big of a deal I think that is and how furious I am about the situation,” Ess writes. “I have a zero tolerance on this and we are working quickly to get these glosses pulled off the shelf to minimize the possibility of you getting one.”

If you happen to already have one of the affected shades in your possession but you haven’t used it yet, there’s an easy way to tell if you received the wrong color: Make sure the name on the bottle itself matches the name on the outside of the box. If it doesn’t, the brand will replace it when you email customer service at customerservice@kristinesshair.com ⁣⁣⁣⁣with a receipt or screenshot of your transaction, a photo showing the numbers on the bottom of the box⁣⁣⁣⁣, and a photo of the bottle next to the box⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣.

If you found out the hard way that you received the wrong color, Ess is making it a priority to make things right. “If you have applied the wrong gloss to your hair, I will be handling your situation personally and finding the right solution on a case-by-case basis,” she writes. Send an email to the same customer service address with all of the aforementioned attachments, plus any before and after photos you may have of your hair, and it will be forwarded directly to Ess herself.
